Back in the 70’s, Jacques Gu\u00e9nette and a partner founded a software company called Cogito.\u00a0 The company had great success but, plagued with unsustainable growth, it eventually imploded. <\/strong><\/p>\n
“We worked until it made us sick”, Mr. Gu\u00e9nette recalls.<\/p>\n
In 1980, Gu\u00e9nette co-founded DLGL, an HR information systems company.\u00a0 “We thought there must be another way of doing things.\u00a0 Not to be the biggest, but the best in our field”.<\/p>\n
According to Jacques Gu\u00e9nette, many large companies are heading for disaster.\u00a0 “Creating shareholder value is the focus of everything”, he says. “You can do almost anything for the sake of it.”<\/p>\n
“Everyone comes up with abominable growth plans that the markets can’t sustain.\u00a0 And when things go wrong, they cut back and it\u2019s the employees who pay the price.”<\/p>\n
In short, “excessive growth, it\u2019s called cancer”, Gu\u00e9nette says.<\/p>\n
DLGL is open to growth, but the company does not specifically seek to multiply its clientele, office space and workforce. The company has about 90 employees, almost the same as five years ago.\u00a0 Annual sales remain relatively stable at $17 million, but profitability is higher than most of its larger sized competitors.<\/p>\n
However, those who support limited growth are often perceived as aliens within the business world.\u00a0 “This is not a language bankers understand”, says Mr. Gu\u00e9nette referring to high powered growth that financial institutions often expect from the companies they finance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
